| There are many conditions today that are confusing and somewhat baffling to pediatricians. Integrative medicine offers an alternate view of some of these conditions, providing patients with additional therapeutic and preventive options. Listed below are a few examples of how a particular modality may help our children today. |
Acupuncture and Acupressure
Beneficial in treating ADHD, Asthma, Anovulatory Cycles, Headaches, Pre and Post op Anesthesia, chemotherapy associated nausea and vomiting, reflux, colic, and Inflammatory Bowel Disorders.
Guided Imagery
Very useful for children. Current studies demonstrate improvement in recurrent abdominal pain, headaches, anxiety, and coping with childhood traumas.
Hypnosis
Significant therapeutic effect in skin disorders, inflammatory bowel disease, asthma, and habit cough.
Nutrition Counseling and Supplement Support
Although beneficial for all children, has shown to be critical in managing ADHD, Reflux, Obesity, Eczema, Asthma, Allergies and Autism.
Manual Medicine
This very broad category includes infant massage, strain/counterstrain techniques and myofascial release. Helpful in treating colic, recurrent abdominal pain, headaches, pelvic pain, sports injuries, reflux and inflammatory bowel disease.
We find that many parents and patients seek answers to their medical problems on their own. We strongly recommend using our services for guidance and education about over the counter supplements and herbs.
Areas where patients may need additional guidance or education:
Herbal Medicines
While many herbs have tremendous therapeutic effects, taking herbal supplements, including Chinese herbal medicines, is not recommended without proper guidance and counseling. Many herbal medicines can also interact with pharmaceutical medications, increasing or decreasing their effectiveness.
Supplements
Over supplementation is never recommended, although most parents believe that “more is better.” Supplement quality varies between brands and many parents need some help or education on picking the best supplements.
Homeopathy
Homeopathy is not harmful, but like Chinese herbs, should not be used without proper guidance. Preparations of homeopathic medications from some countries have been contaminated in the past. Using a practitioner skilled in the practice of these modalities is probably the best bet.
