Local Doctor Begins Integrative Medicine Fellowship with University of Arizona
Program in Integrative Medicine
TUCSON, AZ - Dr. Tasneem Bhatia, MD, FAAP, ABHM, CNS, has been accepted into the highly-regarded Integrative Medicine Fellowship at the University of Arizona Program in Integrative Medicine.
Launched in the summer of 2000 by internationally-recognized Integrative Medicine pioneer and bestselling author Andrew Weil, MD, the Program in Integrative Medicine Fellowship is a unique two-year distance-learning program dedicated to teaching physicians, physician’s assistants and nurse practitioners the art and science of Integrative Medicine. The Fellowship curriculum combines residential sessions in Tucson, Arizona with a “distributed learning” model in which participants learn via the Internet, in the comfort of their own home or office.
Dr. Bhatia, a pediatrician, joined 78 other physicians and nurse practitioners from all over the world the week of January 21 — 26 for a week-long training session in Tucson.
Welcoming the fellows was Executive Director Victoria Maizes, who gave a presentation on the principles of Integrative Medicine and Program Founder Dr. Andrew Weil, who provided an overview of Integrative Medicine as well as taught the anti-inflammatory diet and breathing techniques. The first week of training introduced new fellows to using the online program, as well as to alternative medicine modalities such as guided imagery, energy medicine, strain-counterstrain, tai chi, self-care, mindfulness, motivational interviewing, the art of medicine and botanical medicine.
“This fellowship opportunity has opened my eyes to the vast possibilities for patient care in combining traditional, allopathic medicine with complementary and alternative medicine treatments” said Dr. Bhatia. “I look forward to the next two years of study with great excitement.”
The Fellowship includes 1,000 hours of instruction, emphasizing clinical applications and collaboration to establish a broad knowledge base that will transfer into clinical practice. The curriculum utilizes patient simulations, collaborative dialogues, research updates and dialogues, problem-solving exercises, selected readings, group projects, and presentations. Methods of healing are explored and physicians gain the ability to discuss these areas with both their patients and the practitioners of these disciplines.
